Privacy Policy
ClueLink is a word puzzle game. We collect as little as possible: you can play without an account, without cookies and without any tracking. This policy explains what is stored, where and why.
Who is responsible
ClueLink is run by the ClueLink team. Contact: hello@cluelink.org.
Without a nickname
If you only play on your device (levels, Duel, Party, the daily puzzle without the leaderboard), nothing that identifies you is sent to our servers. When you finish a Solo level or the daily puzzle, an anonymous statistic is sent so we can tell which puzzles are too hard or too easy: the language, the puzzle, whether it was solved, the number of tiles and hints used and the time taken. It contains no player id, no nickname, no country and no IP address.
With a nickname (leaderboards and online games)
When you choose a nickname, we store on our server:
- Nickname — shown publicly on the leaderboards and in online rooms. Please do not use your real name.
- Player id and a key — a random id, and only a scrambled version (hash) of the secret key your browser keeps. There is no email address and no password.
- Scores and progress — points, stars, tiles opened, hints, time, daily streaks, level progress and the results of online games.
- Country — a two-letter country code (for example “AL”) for the country leaderboards. It is worked out by our hosting provider from the location of your internet connection when you send a score. Your IP address is not stored.
- Online rooms — the room code, the nicknames in it and the state of the game. A closed room is deleted after 7 days; the results stay on the leaderboard.
In your browser
The game keeps your settings, level progress, statistics, badges, a game in progress, the puzzles you made yourself and (with a nickname) your player id and secret key in your browser's local storage. This data stays on your device and is not sent to us, except the scores and progress listed above. You can delete it at any time by clearing the site data in your browser. ClueLink uses no cookies, no advertising and no analytics or tracking services.
IP addresses
Like every website, our hosting provider receives your IP address to deliver the pages. Our server functions use it only for a short time in memory to prevent abuse (for example too many sign-ups), and to work out the country code. We never write IP addresses to our database.
Service providers (data processors)
- Supabase (Supabase Inc.) — our database and the live updates for online games. It stores the data listed under “With a nickname” on our behalf.
- Netlify (Netlify Inc.) — hosts the website and runs our server functions, including the country lookup.
They process data only on our instructions. Their servers may be located outside your country, including in the USA; transfers are covered by their data processing terms and the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
Why we process it
To provide the features you choose (leaderboards, online games, progress on several devices) and, in our legitimate interest, to keep the game fair, prevent abuse and improve the puzzles with anonymous statistics.
How long we keep it
Nickname, scores and progress are kept as long as you play. If you would like them deleted, write to us (see below). Anonymous statistics cannot be linked to you and are kept.
Your rights
You can ask for access to your data, correction, deletion, restriction or a copy, and you can object to processing. Write to hello@cluelink.org and include your nickname. You also have the right to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
ClueLink is suitable for all ages. Children should ask a parent before choosing a nickname, and nobody should use their real name as a nickname.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date below.
